While doing this flag we had to follow 5 rules: 1. Keep it simple 2.Use meaningful symbolism 3.Use 2-3 basic colors from the standard color set - (red, blue, black, green, yellow, white) 4. No lettering or seals - (because it cant be read at a distance) 5. Be distinctive or be related - The flags images, colours or patterns should relate to what it symbolizes |

Title: Milwaukee Flag Design Size: 30cm x 46 cm 20 November 2015 Exhibition Text I chose to design a new flag for Milwaukee. I was inspired by Robert Indiana, Milwaukee's current flag and the Chicago’s flag. The blue colour on top of the flag represents the large amount of water Milwaukee has, Lake Michigan. The green at the bottom represents many parks in Milwaukee. The yellow represent the culture of Milwaukee: The Art Museum, Discovery World, Summerfest, the history of Milwaukee, brewing, industry. Lastly the cultural diversity in Milwaukee. |
Process
First I did research about Milwaukee's history, than I started with sketching 1 inch x 1.5 inch rectangles in my sketch book. After that I used the program Paint to digitally have my final flags.
Meaning |
The blue colour on top of the flag represents:
- The large amount of water Milwaukee has, Lake Michigan The green at the bottom represents: - The many parks in Milwaukee The three yellow circles represent different things: 1. Represents the culture of Milwaukee, The Art Museum, Discovery World, Summerfest 2. The history of Milwaukee, brewing, industry. 3 Represents the cultural diversity in Milwaukee. |
-Lake Michigan is the second largest of the Great Lakes by volume and the third-largest by surface area.
-Several of the interesting parks in Milwaukee are: Cass Park, Doctors Park, Copernicus Park and Alcott Park.
- The Art Museum was found in April of 1888 by Frederick Layton who wanted to build an art museum. Currently the museum contains 3 parts, designed by three architects: Eero Saarinen, David Kahler, and Santiago Calatrava. Discovery World was found by Robert Powrie Harland Sr. The Discovery World features 14 interactive science, technology, and freshwater exhibits. Summerfest is the world's larges music festivals it brings between 800,000 and 1,000,000 people each year.
- Milwaukee is well known for the brewers. Four main brewers from the past were Pabst, Schlitz, Blatz and Miller.
-Industry- best natural harbor, trader of grain, largest shipper of wheat.
-Cultural diversity, festivals ( African World Festival, Mexican, Polish, Italian, German), restaurants and galleries. More than half of residents of Milwaukee are African American or Hispanic.

Inspiration |
My three inspirations for this work were Robert Indiana, Milwaukee's current flag and the Chicago flag. Robert Indiana is a American artist associated with the pop art movement. His work that inspired me was the Love Sculpture, mainly the O. That's where I got my ideas for the three yellow circles. The Chicago flag is ranked second best by the North American Vexillologicall Association. This flag gave me the idea for my main concept of having two lines at the top, bottom and something in between the lines. Lastly the current Milwaukee flag got me thinking about some of the historical events I should add to my flag. My cultural inspiration for this project was Milwaukee's history. I'm not from Milwaukee so I had to do a lot of research about Milwaukee's past. I learn quite a lot while doing this project
